Why Golspie High School offers mentoring
Mentoring is a highly effective way for young people to identify and build their strengths, achieve goals, and realise their full potential.
Our mentors help young people think about their future and focus on what they need to do to achieve their goals. Mentors provide careful guidance without imposing any personal ideas or opinions. They work in partnership with the school and support the young person to develop their individual skills and potential.
A mentor is simply an added source of support; someone there to listen, encourage and help young people to reach their potential.
“It’s great to have a mentor. They always listen to what you have to say and share their own experiences with you. They are so friendly and give you great advice to encourage you to do your best.” - Young Person
Together, we can help young people get the best out of school, increase their confidence, boost their qualifications, gain meaningful experiences, and increase their career options after school. Mentors are thoroughly interviewed during the sign-up process, are trained, and required to complete a full PVG Disclosure.
How does it work?
We support young people with diverse, engaging and inspiring opportunities to help them identify their talent and have the confidence to progress to a positive post-school destination. MCR Pathways works with young people from P7 and works with them right up until they leave school.
Who are MCR Pathways?
MCR Pathways is a national, award-winning mentoring programme dedicated to addressing the inequality in education outcomes, career opportunities and life chances for young people in care and those experiencing disadvantage.
Meetings take place one hour in school each week and provide a regular opportunity for the young person to focus on their future, talk through any concerns, or just share thoughts and experiences with their mentor.
Young people will also discuss ideas such as work experience opportunities, the Talent Taster programme, and visits to colleges or universities with their coordinator and mentor. All fun and effective avenues to spark aspirations.
MCR supports young people across Scotland, including: Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Clackmannanshire, Dundee, East Lothian, Edinburgh, Falkirk, Fife, Glasgow, Highland, Inverclyde, North Ayrshire, Perth & Kinross, Shetland, South Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire.
How does it help?
MCR Pathways and Golspie High School believe a young person with extra one-to-one support, ensures that their time at school is as positive an experience as it can be. We want them to leave school having achieved the best qualifications and outcomes that they are capable of. The benefits to young people have been incredible…
· Increased school attendance.
· Improved educational performance.
· Improved confidence.
· Increased focus & less behaviour challenges
